5 Clean Sunscreens you need to try

Updated: May 3, 2020

What is sunscreen

Sunscreen is an active ingredient usually in the form of a cream or and lotion with the purpose of protecting your skin from the sun. As technology advances in the beauty industry sunscreen also comes in many forms such as mist sprays and balms.

They work by filtering out UV radiation facilitated by the combined active ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide identified as inorganic compounds, form a physical barrier, reflecting or scattering UV waves. Whereas organic components absorb UV rays and release their energy as heat.

These are the main difference between sunscreen and sunblock yet they both help protect the skin against harmful UV rays.

Is sunscreen safe

The use of sunscreen has been proven to reduce the risk of common skin cancers, as well as other forms cancer such as melanoma. The evidence so far that identifies the nanoparticles used as physical filters in sunscreens (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) to be harmful to health, or increase the risk negative health outcomes.

However, some questions have been raised on some ingredients used in some sunscreens in the USA, read further here.

Do dark skinned people need to use sunscreen

Melanin is the pigment that gives all skin its colour, it happens to be in more abundance in darker skin tones this allows dark skin to absorb UV light and block free radical damage much more effectively over their counterparts.

While this means darker skin toned people can stay safe in the sun a little longer than paler skin toned it doesn't mean that dark skin does not suffer damage and risk getting skin cancers due to sun exposure.

If you come from an African heritage family you know how relaxed we all are about applying SPF, if cancer doesn't scare you maybe the following will, wrinkles, skin laxity and sagging all prematurely due to unprotected sun exposure is a fact and a real threat, to name a few.

Even though dark skin is less prone to these conditions when compared to an age equivalent individual of white skin, dark skin types are still vulnerable to sun damage and must wear sunscreen daily and reapply when possible through out the day.

We also know that the use of antioxidants in your skincare routine will help your skin fight the environmental elements, helping you avoid hyperpigmentation. Discover more on the products we recommend here.

We have compiled the best non toxic sunscreen you can get in our opinion, they come at an affordable price, we made sure these are melanin friendly too, so no ashy face is to be expected when using them.

oh ps we believe if a sunscreen is great on dark skin it must be amazing on any other skin tones, as the struggle to formulate sunscreen for dark skin tones has been real.
